A Model for Nonclassical Nucleation of Solid-Solid Structural Phase Transformations

چکیده
A new model for homogeneous nucleation of structural phase transformations, which can span the range of nucleation from classical to nonclassical, is presented. This model is extended from the classical nucleation theory by introducing driving-force dependencies into the interfacial free energy, themisfit strain energy, and the nucleus chemical free-energy change in order to capture the nonclassical nucleation phenomena. The driving-force dependencies are determined by matching the asymptotic solutions of the new model for the nucleus size and the nucleation energy barrier to the corresponding asymptotic solutions of the Landau–Ginzburg model for nucleation of solid-state phase transformations in the vicinity of lattice instability. Thus, no additional material parameters other than those of the classical nucleation theory and the Landau–Ginzburg model are required, and nonclassical nucleation behavior can be easily predicted based on the well-developed analytical solutions of the classical nucleation model. A comparison of the new model to the Landau–Ginzburg model for homogeneous nucleation of a dilatational transformation is presented as a benchmark example. An application to homogeneous nucleation of a cubic-to-tetragonal transformation is presented to illustrate the capability of this model. The nonclassical homogeneous nucleation behavior of the experimentally studied fcc → bcc transformation in the Fe-Co system is examined by the new model, which predicts a 20 pct reduction in the critical driving force for homogeneous nucleation.

Phase Field Model for the Nucleation in Solid State Phase Transformations : Theories , Algorithms and Applications
Nucleation takes place when a material becomes thermodynamically meta-stable with respect to its transformation to a new state or new crystal structure. Very often, the nucleation process dictates the microstructure of a material. Predicting the shape of a critical nucleus in solids has been a long-standing problem in solid state phase transformations. It is generally believed that nucleation i...

We present a dynamical theory of a two–dimensional martensitic transition in an elastic solid, connecting a high–temperature phase which is nondegenerate and has triangular symmetry, and a low– temperature phase which is triply degenerate and has oblique symmetry. A global mode–based Galerkin method is employed to integrate the deterministic equation of motion, the latter of which is derived by...

The microscopic kinetics of ubiquitous solid-solid phase transitions remain poorly understood. Here, by using single-particle-resolution video microscopy of colloidal films of diameter-tunable microspheres, we show that transitions between square and triangular lattices occur via a two-step diffusive nucleation pathway involving liquid nuclei. The nucleation pathway is favoured over the direct ...

The effect of elastic energy on nucleation and disappearance of a nanometer size intermediate melt (IM) region at a solid-solid (S1S2) phase interface at temperatures 120 K below the melting temperature is studied using a phase-field approach. Results are obtained for broad range of the ratios of S1S2 to solid-melt interface energies, k(E), and widths, k(δ). It is found that internal stresses o...
